Advantages to Using an Underwater Telephone
The ITT Model 5400 Underwater Telephone
Communication can be bidirectional
As with any normal telephone conversation, using an underwater telephone works both ways. The submarine can send status reports and other data back to headquarters as well as receive new orders or commands.
Relatively high speed data rates are possible
While telephones (including underwater telephones) do not have a very high data-rate compared to most other forms of modern communication, it is still sufficient to carry a normal audio conversation. This means that its data rate is measured in kilobits per second, rather than the bits per minute of the ELF radio, which is the other option for communication.
