Underwater Telephones
Model of a modern underwater telephone system.
Underwater telephone is one of the two ways that submarines can communicate underwater. It works by modulating the original audio signal to a high enough frequency to be transmitted underwater and transmitting it through the water in the form of high-frequency sound waves. The receiver then picks up the signal, demodulates it, and then plays the recovered audio.
This technology is also used by divers and oceanographers as the 'telephones' can be used for other kinds of data, not just audio. The oceanographers use the telephones in order to control robots used to investigate natural underwater formations and shipwrecks.
