Underwater Telephone Application
There are two general possibilities as far as underwater telephone applications go. The first possibility is that the submarine is talking to either another submarine or a surface boat, in which case they need to be within range of each other. The other option is the submarine is talking to a stationary underwater telephone that is attached via a cable to the mainland. The diagram to the right shows one possible network of stationary underwater telephones connected by cable to the mainland.
Dart II
Although the DART (Deep ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis) II is not used to communicate with submarines, it does use the same technology as the underwater telephone to communicate with the buoy that can communicate with a satellite link. The communication is bi-directional and can be done at depths of thousands of meters.
